Dr. Peter Nowak has been working as a social scientist in the further development of the Austrian health system for over 30 years. He studied linguistics and psychology in Vienna. At the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for the Sociology of Health and Medicine, he was responsible for medical-sociological research and development projects concerning health care (integrated care, quality management, patient orientation) and health promotion from 1986 to 2008. Since 1990, he has been a lecturer at several universities, in particular for qualitative social science methods, project management, public health and control issues in the health system. Until January 2011, he was Deputy Director and Senior Researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute Health Promotion Research in Vienna, most recently with a research focus on participation and health promotion, self-help and patient organizations as well as doctor-patient communication.

Since September 2013, Peter Nowak has been Head of the Department of Health and Society at GÖG. From 2013 to 2015, he was significantly involved in the scientific monitoring of the Austrian Health Target 3 concerning Health Literacy and also in the development of the Austrian Health Literacy Alliance (ÖPGK). His current work focuses on health literacy (Senior Researcher at the ÖPGK Coordination Office), discussion in health care, health promotion and patient orientation in health care, and support for strategic processes within the framework of the Austrian health reform.
